📖 Meaning
the sacrament of marriage in Hindu dharma.one of the sixteen major sanskars (Shodasha Sanskaras) prescribed in Vedic tradition.
Vivah” means union and “Sanskar” means purification ritual.It symbolizes the sacred union of two souls, not just a social contract but a spiritual bond for dharma (duty), artha (prosperity), kama (love), and moksha (liberation).
✨ Significance
1. Sacred Duty (धर्म) → Marriage is considered a dharmic responsibility.
2. Spiritual Union → Husband and wife are seen as Ardhangini (two halves of one whole).
3. Family & Society → It ensures continuation of family lineage and social order.
4. Yajna-like Ritual → Performed in the presence of Agni (sacred fire) as witness.
🔹 Main Rituals of Vivah Sanskar
1. Ganesh Puja & Grah Shanti
Worship of Lord Ganesha for removing obstacles.Navagraha puja for planetary harmony.
2. Kanyadaan (कन्यादान)
The bride’s parents offer their daughter to the groom, symbolizing trust and sacred responsibility.
3. Mangalashtak & Jayamala
Exchange of garlands between bride and groom, accepting each other.
4. Mangal Phera (सप्तपदी / Saat Phere)
The couple walks around the sacred fire seven times.Each round represents vows of love, trust, and companionship.
5. Saptapadi (Seven Vows)
With each step, they promise mutual respect, support, prosperity, health, friendship, and faithfulness.
6. Sindoor & Mangalsutra
Groom applies sindoor (vermilion) on bride’s forehead and ties the mangalsutra (sacred necklace).Symbol of married life and commitment.
7. Ashirwad (आशीर्वाद)
Elders bless the newly married couple for a prosperous and harmonious life.
